My Existential Crisis is a Pain

This video installation is part of the Common Daisies art exhibition produced by students of NTU School of Art, Design and Media.

Limbo in Latin means "edge", which refers to the edge of Hell.

This video installation is seen from the point of view of The Protagonist, who is entering different chapters of her life. As time passes, the visuals repeat themselves with little anomalies sprinkled throughout. Eventually, The Protagonist enters a tunnel and gets sent back to the start of the first chapter to begin the infinite loop.

This piece is inspired by my experience of feeling stuck in limbo during certain parts of my life. During these moments, I felt dread and lived through the motions. Everything was repeating itself, and I couldn't break out of this cycle for the longest time. I made this film to release that stress and tension within myself. It is a catharsis for me.

This work has inspired me to delve more deeply into my personal experiences and find comfort in sharing them with others through an artistic medium. It has also allowed me to confront myself and the thoughts I've always tried to push to the back of my mind.

Ultimately, My Existential Crisis is a pain in the A** questions the repetitive nature of life and how routinary things can sometimes be. Are we trapping ourselves inside our own lives? Can we break free from this cycle? What happens when we do break free?

The film uses chapters to transition to the next scene, like a book. It presents a story-like format that allows one to step into the shoes of The Protagonist as they watch the film play out. The picture frame serves as a metaphor for the feeling of entrapment. It traps The Protagonist in a frame, freezing her in a specific position on the wall, where she cannot escape. The frame and projection are like a window to The Protagonist's world, where the viewer can witness her predicament.
